HRYCYN Natalie
1932-2023
MAGNUS POIRIER INC.It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Natalie Freitag (nee Hrycyn) at her home under the care of her children, on Saturday February 4, 2023, at the age of 90, just twelve days before her 91st birthday. She was born in Drohobych, Ukraine to the late Maria (nee Huk) and Mykola Hrycyn. Forced to flee their beloved Ukraine, she immigrated to Canada, along with her family in 1949, arriving by boat at Pier 21, in Halifax, after the war. Predeceased by her devoted husband Reinhold (Ray) Freitag, who left us too soon; her sister Rose (late Joe Sobol); and brother Myron (Bill). She leaves to mourn her loving daughters Susie and Sandra, devoted son-in-law Arthur (Honsberger), and sister Sylvia (late Peter Noonan).

During her youth, Natalie was a brilliant student and athlete, and spent much of her spare time, at the Montreal Ukrainian sports club, with her brother Myron, where she especially enjoyed playing Volleyball and Ping Pong. She remained physically active for many years, and loved to walk long distances, and her stationary bike. She adored her baby sister, Sylvia (Slawka), and brought her everywhere, most memorably to Mount Royal park, and then for treats at the Bilas Ukrainian restaurant on Duluth street. Natalie had a love for the movies, and spent many hours at the local cinema. Renowned for her natural beauty, she received many compliments, and was often likened to famous actresses of her era. Always stylish and well-dressed, she loved to shop for the latest imports at American Sample, and later on at Rockland shopping centre, where she often brought her daughters and spoiled them with the best and most beautiful clothes. She also loved music, and sang in the Ukrainian Iberville church choir. Her love for poetry and singing, extended well into her later years, and she displayed a remarkable memory for lyrics.

Natalie met her husband Ray, while vacationing on Golden Lake, in Val-David, while he was building our family cottage, where their romance, and our family history began, and where we all shared many wonderful memories, She also had very fond memories of her trip to California in the 1960's, where she and her husband Ray visited the original Disney Land, Universal Studios, and met Hollywood celebrities. Natalie was a devoted wife and mother, to her daughters and son-in-law Arthur, a wonderful cook, and loved to spend time with her family.

She will be sadly missed.
