BAILLY, Robert William

1927 - 2022

Lachute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert William Bailly on March 8, 2022 at Manoir Beaconsfield in Montreal, QC.

Robert (Bob) was born on August 14, 1927 in the shipbuilding port city of Lunenburg, NS, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He was the only son of the late Elvin and Louise Bailly (née Boehner). Preceding him in death was his wife of over 60 years, Isabel Bailly (née McOuat). Bob is deeply mourned by his daughters Ann Watts (née Bailly) and Jane Bailly (David Schaal) and his grand-daughters, Stephanie and Michelle Watts. He is survived by a loving extended family in Lachute and Nova Scotia, of whom he was very fond.

Bob obtained his undergraduate and teacher’s degrees at Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, QC, where he received a BSc in 1947 and a teaching diploma in 1948. His teaching career began at Asbestos QC, where he pioneered a physical education program and taught mathematics. In 1952, he moved to Lachute High School where he served as Vice-Principal and ultimately, Principal, all while teaching math and coaching basketball, curling, softball and badminton. While at Lachute High, he coached the women’s basketball team to 3 provincial championships. In 1967, Bob and his family moved to the West Island of Montreal where he joined the staff of Lindsay Place High School. There he continued to teach mathematics and coach his beloved basketball until retirement in 1983.

The Bailly Trophy for women’s high school basketball was named in his honour in recognition of the many years he devoted to promoting physical education and coaching basketball in Quebec schools. Seventy-five years later, the “Bailly Small Schools Provincial Tournament” remains a highly anticipated yearly exhibit of good sportsmanship, camaraderie, and exceptional athletics.

Bob will be fondly remembered for his love of cribbage, March Madness, Lunenburg, and – above all else – family. The many family traditions he instilled in us will keep him alive in our hearts forever.

A private graveside service will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Lunenburg Academy at:
