Major General John J. Dunn CMM,CD (1930-2022)
Major General John J. Dunn, CMM, CD, passed away at the CHSLD Vigi-Shermont, Sherbrooke, QC on August 30, 2022, at the age of 92, beloved husband of the late Françoise Rousseau, of Sherbrooke.
Mr. Dunn was the loving father of Robert (Johanne Labbé), Nina (Jim Sheehan) (Roland Dubeau), Peter (Sandy Flemming), John C. (Anne-Marie Laberge) and the late Susan; cherished grandfather of Pavla (Charles), Pierre-Alexandre (Marylise), Nathasha, Jake (Marissa), Kassie, Andrew, Victoria; great-grandfather of 11, and his precious friend Elizabeth Redpath. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, cousins, other friends and relatives. Mr. Dunn had many passions in his life, sailing, hunting, fishing, golfing and skiing, and his beloved regiment, Les Fusiliers de Sherbrooke, where he rose to Major General and was Commander of the Canadian Reserves in the 1980s. After attending Bishop’s and Western University, he joined his father’s insurance firm CW Dunn, where he eventually ran the company for more than 25 years.
A pillar of the Eastern Townships business community, Mr. Dunn was also a generous philanthropist, supporting many of the region’s institutions such as University de Sherbrooke, CHUS, Bishop’s College School, Sherbrooke Hospital, Abbey St-Benoit, Bishop’s University and many more.
Family and friends are invited to meet at the Steve L. Elkas Funeral Home (4230 Bertrand Fabi, Sherbrooke) on Thursday, September 8, 2022 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Friday, September 9, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Funeral service will be held at St-Patrick’s Church (20 Gordon, Sherbrooke) on Friday, September 9 at 11 a.m.
The family would like to thank all the medical and nursing personnel at the CHSLD VIGI-Shermont for the excellent care given to Mr. Dunn.
