CALANDRA Maria
1931-2020
MAGNUS POIRIER INC.Maria Teresa Calandra Castellano passed away peacefully of natural causes at her home in Montreal, Quebec on May 10, 2020 with her family by her side. Maria was born on January 9, 1931 in Capizzi, Italy, the first of four beloved and closely-knit sisters. She met the love of her life and soulmate Salvatore, and they married in 1951.

Maria is survived by her forever devoted and caring eldest son Antonino, her loving daughter Joanna (Perry), her adoring sons Agostino (Lynne), and Enrico (Majella) and her siblings Lina (Nicola), Paola (Alberto) and brother-in-law Camillo. Maria was grandmother to Salvatore, Melissa, Christopher, Rachel, Justin, Matthew, Julien and Maria-Olivia, and is predeceased by her cherished husband Salvatore, her loving parents Rachela and Agostino, and her sweet sister Giuseppina.

Maria lived a full life and was absolutely devoted to her family. She was always available to hear stories with an open mind, recount her anecdotes, and offer her endless kernels of wisdom and spontaneous humour. She was forever a nurturer and whole-heartedly cared for her grandchildren. She relished her extended family and excluded no one, remembering birthdays, anniversaries, namesakes and any milestones important to the ones she loved. She loved to cook, read, do artful needlework, put on her red lipsticks and earrings, and take long walks. She was an impressive intuitive and smart beyond the knowledge of textbooks. She worked for a decade in the clothing-manufacturing sector, rose through the ranks, and ultimately decided to leave to nurture her children.

Having courageously fought a long and fierce battle with the complications of rheumatoid arthritis, being immobile, and other ailments, Maria’s physical self succumbed to the illnesses peacefully knowing that she would be reunited with her beloved soulmate Salvatore. Her family is deeply saddened by the loss of this amazing, gracious and loving woman. Her family are grateful for the strong sense of selflessness, love and fairness that Maria instilled in them and will forever carry her spirit and pure essence in their beings.
