GIBBONS, Lionel

2012

Pincourt

Samuel Lionel Gibbons, 84, of Pincourt, passed away Friday, October 19, 2012, at the Centre d'hébergement de Vaudreuil, Vaudreuil, QC. Private family visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday October 26 at Rideau Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday October 26 at the same location, 4239 boul. des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux QC, followed by burial in the cemetery.

Lionel was born May 13, 1928, in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Samuel and Enid (Arthur) Gibbons. He married Jeanne Rhea Bélanger on October 9, 1954 in Montreal. After earning his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Concordia University in Montreal, Lionel earned his living as an accountant, spending the majority of his career at Leviton Manufacturing.
He always sought the best for his family, without regard for his own needs. As a result, he moved his young family to Pincourt, to the west of Montreal, so that his children could grow up in an idyllic country setting, while he made the long daily commute to Ville St. Michel.

His passion for sports was plain to see - and hear - to anyone who happened by the house during a hotly contested hockey, baseball, or football game. He loved to compete as a boxer and hockey player in his younger days, and passed his passion for sports along to his children, both of who took to athletics from an early age. Lionel also used sports to stay connected to the community, coaching the local pee-wee baseball team for several years when his kids were young. He remained active in retirement, and was known to ride his bicycle surprisingly long distances for a man well into his seventies, and spent hours on his hands and knees being a “horsie” to his beloved granddaughter, Jacintha, whom he liked to call “peanut”.

Lionel is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Jeannine); daughter, Sharon; and son, Lionel Jr.; granddaughter, Jacintha; son-in-law Michael Fox; sister Dorothy Hall of Detroit MI and brother Walter Gibbons of North York ON.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Oncology Department of the Lakeshore General Hospital would be appreciated.
