HALLWARD, John M.

2011

Outremont

John Marsham Hallward (1929-2011)

John died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon 12 July, surrounded by his family, at the age of 82. Son of Bernard and Alice, devoted husband of Clare, father of Jenny, Anne, Mary, Peter, Kate and Stoph, grandfather of eleven, John was a kind, generous and unfailingly cheerful person, who dedicated his life to making things better for others.
John was educated at TCS, McGill and Oxford, and then spent fifteen years working for international reconciliation with MRA. Publisher of Pace Magazine in the 1960s, he later became a leading figure in the Montreal philanthropic community, serving for many years as, among other things, president of Centraide, deputy chair of the McGill Board of Governors, vice-president of the Montreal Neurological Institute & Hospital, president of the Canada-Poland Chamber of Commerce, president of the Quebec-Canada Committee, rector's warden of Christ Church Cathedral. He was also a partner of Waddington & Gorce art gallery, committed to recognizing Inuit sculptors and print-makers as individual artists.
The Government of Poland gave John the highest decoration given to a non-Pole for making eight remarkable trips, during the Solidarity years of the 1980s, to bring aid to the Polish people through the Catholic Church, distributing shoes, clothes, medical supplies, cooking oil, etc. to the neediest across the country. He later visited Refusenik families in Moscow, again to demonstrate that 'actions speak louder than words'.
In his final years John faced dementia with the same cheerful good humour that characterised all he did, and was treated with loving care by Clare and by Marjorie, William, Holly and Lydia. He will be remembered by so many for his playful way with words and the lengths to which he would go to meet others' needs.
A service will be held at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex (1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, Quebec H2V 2P9, (514) 279-6540, off the Blvd Mont Royal) on Saturday 16 July at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to either the Montreal Neurological Institute, 3801 University St., Montreal, H3A 2B4, (514) 398-1958, or the McGill University Libraries, 1430 Peel St., Montreal, H3A 3T3, (514) 398-3560.
