DEUTSCHMAN, Janusz (John)

2011

Montreal

The Deutschman family deeply regrets to announce the passing of a dear husband and father, JANUSZ EDWARD (JOHN) DEUTSCHMAN on February 10, 2011, in his ninetieth year. John died peacefully at the Lakeshore General Hospital, Pointe-Claire, Quebec, after a month as a patient there. For several months his health had been declining. In recent weeks, his wife and children were fortunate to be able to visit with him and express their fond farewells to a loving and devoted husband and father.
Janusz was born in Biernatki, Poland and spent his high school years in Kalisz. He survived the war years and found a new life in Canada, early in 1953. He had spent a few years in England where he met his wife, Jean, became father to daughter, Yvonne, received a degree from London University and was presented with a war medal by the British. On arriving in Canada, the company of Alcan hired John as a chemist for Arvida Works Main Analytical Laboratory. The association lasted thirty-three years. Two sons were born in Arvida; Paul in 1954 and Anthony in 1958.
John looked back on a varied and interesting Alcan career and divided it into different types of Chemistry. He enjoyed his assignments abroad, to Guinea, Banbury (UK), and Jamaica where he transferred in 1969 and became Aljam's Chief Chemist, and later, the Company's first Process Consultant. Over the years, he was the recipient of seven Alcan medals for inventions which were patented.
He wrote detailed memoirs of his life in Poland from early pre-war years through to experiences as a very young man in war-torn Europe with its dangers, atrocities and loss of life. He embraced his life in Canada where he enjoyed the outdoors, nature and the wildlife, and compared favourably the Canadian and Polish winters. He enjoyed sports, particularly swimming and skiing. He tried fishing and duck-hunting and liked cottage life. He was a world-traveller and planned trips with his family.......he visited Australia seven times and had hoped to make a trip next month but his health prevented it.
Janusz lived a full and active life. He kept in touch with his Polish relatives and his trips there with family were written up in copies of Alcan's Emeritus magazine. He belonged to the Canadian Legion and read its magazines with great interest. He enjoyed Photography in earlier years. He missed his old friends, as one by one, they pre-deceased him.
He will be remembered and missed by his loving family and friends, his daughter-in-law, Penny and granddaughters, Alexandra and Erica, his sister-in-law Mildred and her husband in the UK, his brother-in-law Alan and his wife in Oakville, nieces and nephews in Canada, England and Poland and acquaintances in various parts of the world.
The family will receive condolences on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 1pm. until 3pm.,followed by a celebration of John's life at 3pm in the Chapel of Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources Blvd, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Québec.
